HLA B27

Carried in 5–7% of Caucasian population.

Associations

  1. ankylosing spondylitis (95%)
  2. Reiter's syndrome
  3. reactive arthritis (Chlamydia, Salmonella, Campylobacter, Yersinia)
  4. Sacroileitis (IBD, psoriasis)

Pathology

HLA-B27 can form H-chain homodimers not associated with β2-microglobulin. It may be recognised as a MHC class II molecule by CD4 T cells. (Allen, R.L. et al. J Immunol 1999; 162: 5045-5048).
