Bacterial Meningitis

Presentation

Febrile meningism. Consciousness usually not impaired. If impaired, suspect encephalitis.

Investigations

CT/MRI then LP
Blood culture
scrape rash for culture and microscopy
throat swab
acute serology

Diagnosis

CSF Glucose down, polymorphs up.

Treatment

If meningococcal infection is suspected, then treat first before investigation.
Rx IV penicillin or cefotaxime.
