Thienopyridines

Clopidogrel
Ticlopidine (less used because of risk of agranulocystosis)

Indications

CVA, TIA, MI, CABG, PTCA (prevent stent occlusion).
Only in patients who cannot tolerate aspirin.

Mechanism

Platelet ADP receptor antagonists.

Adverse effects

Clopidogrel: GI haemorrhage (only slightly less frequently than aspirin). Side effect profile similar to aspirin. Agranulocytosis (rare). Ticlopidine: Neutropaenia (2.4% of which 1/3 were severe). Diarrhoea.
