Percussion

The finger you put on the surface to be percussed is the pleximeter finger. The finger you use to strike is the plexor. Physicians frequently percuss twice over each spot: first hard, then soft.

Percussion was used by Hippocrates and re-invented by Dr Leopold Auenbrugger in 1761, after he observed a wine merchant percussing out a barrel.
