Tremor

Definition: rhythmic involuntary movement.
Characteristics:
  1. precipitant (resting, movement, postural)
  2. rate (slow 4–6 Hz) or fast (6–12 Hz)
  3. amplitude (fine or coarse)
  4. distribution (trunk or limbs, distal or proximal)

Physiological

May be exaggerated by anxiety, hyperthyroidism, phaeochromcytoma. Specific types:
  1. Familial (autosomal dominant)
  2. Benign essential (no FHx)
  3. Senile
May improve with EtOH and β-blockers.

Parkinsonian

  1. resting
  2. slow: 4–6 Hz
  3. coarse
  4. distal

Cerebellar

  1. movement
  2. 4–6 Hz
  3. coarse
  4. both proximal and distal
